The Random Texan is IN THE HOUSE

A year and a half ago, I retired from University teaching. Turns out there was a buttload of stuff that I’d neglected or procrastinated on AND a whole new set of surprise chores that the retirement counselors (some folks get ’em, right?) don’t tell you about. So I’ve been busy, not with “honey do’s,” but “honey have-to-do’s.” And now I’m coming up for air, and getting down to some serious, and much more frequent, blogging.

I will of course continue my scatterbrained set of topics like the Urban Chicken Movement, recipes Estilo Americano, and occasional run-the-numbers-’cause-I-can’t-believe-your-bullshit analyses. But I’m getting down and serious about two major elephants in the room of American life. And the winners are

  • Our Built Environment. OK, I am NOT an architect, urban planner, or interior designer. But I am a somewhat disabled person living in the world those people built for (or against) us. I’m smart enough to see what works for me and my compatriots, and what doesn’t. And I’m dumb enough to let y’all know. Look for the tags/categories our built environment.
  • Eating Ourselves to Death. Over 11% of Americans are diabetics. For the first period in American history life spans are declining. And it’s not because of war or infertility or drugs. We’re quite literally eating ourselves to death. I’ll point out problems and suggest how to deal with them, from the top down, the bottom up, and from the inside middle. I aim to die comfortably–with a worn-out metabolism–sipping one last Zinfandel after a bite of blood-rare steak. And if it’s good enough, I ain’t going. Look for the tags/categories eating ourselves to death, Estilo Americano, Big Carb and Big Noise.
