Like old-time racial discrimination, it’s status anxiety.  Good discussion in the comments, too.  This theory definitely has the Ring of Truth to it.

    The demographics are definitive that, in all of the political parties: When a male has a wife he’s married only to a politician. When a female has a husband she’s married only to a politician. And the unmarried are the same condition. Big city northern peabrain people- architects in the south country are pervert Leaf Peepers in the autumn.

    But, all in all I admit the truth that north country people, far from cities & suburbs @ 35 below 0 Fahren 40 nights a year, do know something about respect for freedom. Their ice hockey players ain’t time wasters pretending to be some other person.
