San Antonio is mostly suburbs, and development has been pretty patchy,
especially on the north side where the terrain is uneven and there are
significant creeks and streams–which channel flash floods every
year. As a result, there is a significant urban deer population,
with attendant problems. Even in my neighborhood, the Mrs and I
sometimes surprise a good-sized buck browsing acorns in the neighbors’
yards during our early morning constitutional.

I often joke that Texas should establish a season for urban deer
hunting using weapons that are relatively safe in an suburban enclave,
say a spear or bow-and-arrow. Now I read that the folks in
Alabama and Pennsylvania are going me one better: an atlatl season! And follow the link at the end of the article: there’s a World Atlatl Association, and the stuff at BPS Engineering is downright amazing.
Atlatl triva: the word "atlatl" is Aztec. The Mayans call it a "hul-che."
