“I’m counting my lucky stars that there’s still the possibility that this PSLF program will remain intact because I have dedicated my whole professional life to public service,” Megan Flocken, a 41-year-old former public school teacher and current nonprofit worker, told Business Insider.
She’s projected to see her nearly $160,000 balance wiped out through PSLF in July after making payments for nearly 10 years. But having been enrolled in former President Joe Biden’s SAVE plan, which is currently blocked in court, Flocken has been on forbearance and has not been able to earn credit toward PSLF.
Dedicated ≠ former public school teacher. Twenty years of undergraduate teaching tells me that Ms Flocken ain’t coming clean on her misspent youth and education, especially after blowing through $160,000 on what could be obtained for $16,500 from the Western Governors University online program.
I’ve seen plenty of these no-hopers at the U. They start out majoring in something solid, say History or Biology. When the going gets rough and the GPAs asymptotically approach 1.0 it’s time to change majors to one of the social sciences (“I was told there would be no math in this course.”). When such worthies discover they have no social skills, they change majors again, finding welcome refuge in the School of Education. Where they can cultivate their Inner Dictators and perfect the art of Making America Rude and Stupid, one public school student at a time.
Lady, don’t try to sh*t this old sh*tter. Mom taught me how to tell the Big Lie in my sleep and twice before breakfast. I’ve told lies to generals, the general public, loan officers, and random dimwits in bars all over. Gimme a friggin’ break. Indeed.
