I’ve just finished installing Windows 7 on my home PC and laptop. Yes, I’m a pokey old dinosaur who believes the rule "Never buy version 1.0 of anything," but I did manage to miss out on the Windows Vista nonsense. Windows 7 is great! Lots of nice features–Homegroup lets me share files wirelessly, the slideshow backgrounds are big fun, the Snipping Tool has replaced my old SnagIt add-on, and the Aero graphics makes my old Toshiba tablet look like a brand-new computer. If you’d like to tweak the appearance of the Desktop even more, here are two great utility programs:
- Fences — lets you group Desktop icons and control their placement, fabulous for dual monitors
- Thoosje Windows 7 logonscreen editor — lets you change the initial logon background from that decidedly metrosexual thing with vines and bird (yeah, it’s version 1.0, sue me)
