Why Batman only appears at night…

Saturday, November 1st, was the Second Annual Rowdy Rec Run 5K at the UTSA Recreation Center.  This year the Rec Center went all-out, with a genuine race clock, a new race course, motorcycle escort, a three-man relay class, and a great after-race party at the new Lazy River (Mmmm, free Smoothies!).  The course was extremely well-marked, with plenty of cheerful course marshalls and water stations.  And unlike the  leg-burning Roger Soler-inspired Diploma Dash 5K course, the RRR course took its hill-climbing slow and gentle, looping around the West Campus before descending through the central campus mainentance tunnels to the South Paseo.  Everyone got a good workout without getting beat up.  Way to go, Rec Center!

As is my usual habit with university-sponsored races, I offered my students extra credit for participating: 10 points for running, 10 more points for beating me.  I’m happy to report that 12  of 13 students who showed were able to outrun me and the Mrs.  Too bad for my students that I had forgotten there was a costume contest as part of the run, or I would have offered even more extra credit.  BUT, since I won the costume contest in my barrio-grade Batman outfit, thanks in large part to my student cheering section, all participants get an extra 5 points.

The only downside?  That damn rubber Batman mask gets HOT in the sun; I think I sweated 2 pounds off my face.  No wonder Batman only appears at night!

Update (4 November).  Race times are posted.
