Those smartypants at the New Yorker think they’re making fun of all the exaggerated rumors about Team Obama, and defusing them. I suspect that many Redneck Americans, when confronted with this cartoon, will say "Look, those pinko bastards think Barack-O and his commie wife are funny. Screw ’em!"
Update (14 July). A whole lot of discussion going on over at Ta-Nehisi Coates blog. I’ve always said, "If you have to explain it, it ain’t art," and there’s a whole lot of explaining going on. And yes, I have been thinking about printing up some t-shirts.
Another tip from the Instapundit.
Update (15 July). Over at Pajamas Media, Michael Weiss makes an entire meal out of what I thought was a little snack. I guess when you DO explain art, it becomes journalism. Mark Hemingway at The Corner weighs in, and agrees with my description of the New Yorker staff as "smartypants."
Update (17 July). Obama finally weighs in, declaring the cartoon "actually an insult to Muslim Americans." Well, duh! a devout Muslim wouldn’t allow his wife to wear that lovely Afro-camo pants-AK47 combo without a burka! I guess means he really, truly isn’t a Muslim.
