Google is a company with a cute name and a cuddly reputation;
30-percent profit margins and a market capitalization of $144 billion;
and a freshly inked, sweetheart deal to build a data center in the
Caldwell County city of Lenoir.
A data center is basically a climate-controlled
warehouse full of computers, with a seemingly limited capacity to
create excellent jobs or kick-start further business growth around it.
Ask for anything but Google. Hmm…I wonder about the deal Microsoft is getting for their new data center here in San Antonio. I also wonder if they hire me for one of those "… jobs in Northwest San Antonio with an average annual salary of up to $70,000." That’s a heck of a salary for a janitor. Of course, that’s the average. Fifteen executives making $275K, supervising 60 burros making $19K gives an average of about $70K, so maybe the janitor gig isn’t so hot. And do you think any local boy has a shot at one of those executive spots? To their credit, Microsoft doesn’t make a big deal about the good-vs-evil thing.
